Game Summaries

 …Out of Time and Ice

Feb 18, 2013

The Chase Heat Junior Hockey Club completed it’s second season in the Kootenay International Hockey League with a trio of games this past week.  On Wednesday February 13th the local side played host to the Sicamous Eagles.  The visitors took a 3 – 1 victory home to the houseboat capital.  Goal scorer for Chase was Michael Keyes, with he and Jake Mattes getting two of the three stars.  Mattes faced 50 shots stopping 47, another busy night for the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Saturday the 16th saw the same two teams in action in Sicamous.  The Eagles were vying for top seed in the division and skated to a 5 – 2 win.  Heat goals by Marc MacKenzie and Connor Venne.  Mattes faced 31 shots between the pipes.

Sunday afternoon the 17th the Heat were in Armstrong to finish out the 52 game season versus the North Okanagan Knights.  The Armstrong crew captured first place in the division over the Eagles by one point with a 5 – 1 victory over Chase.  Mattes faced 55 shots with the Heat lone goal coming off the stick of Levi Chamberlain, the teams Most Sportsmanlike Player.

So no playoff battles for the Heat who are in their second year as a franchise in the KIJHL.  The Top Scorer award went to Shelby Kostyshen with 19 goals, 23 assists for 42 points good for 54th in the league, along with 44 minutes in the sin bin.  The very young team result over 52 games was 11 wins, 35 losses, 3 ties and 3 overtime losses for 28 points, 17th in the 20 team league.  A slight improvement over the first year but an improvement all the same.

The Heat Jr. Hockey Society and Chase Heat Hockey Club thank all of you in Chase and area for your excellent support and encouragement as we continue to build a successful franchise for years to come.  Early bird Season Ticket Packages will be on sale in May 2013.

Busy Week On and Off the Ice!

February 11, 2013

On Wednesday February 6th the Chase Heat clashed with the Grizzlies in Revelstoke.  At games end the Heat won 4 – 3 over the Grumpy Bears.  Nic Fidanza with two, Connor Venne and Marc MacKenzie fired four past the opposition tender.  Jake Mattes went the distance between the pipes stopping 36 of 39 shots.

On Friday the 8th the first of two back to back games versus the Kamloops Storm took place at Art Holding Memorial Arena.  This contest was a stormy night as the visitors walked away with a 9 to 1 victory.  Shelby Kostyshen got the only goal for the locals.  Mattes was chased after 7 and replaced by Devon Pearson on a night where the goaltenders were left to fend for themselves.

The Jekyl and Hyde act the local side has been displaying this year showed itself on Saturday the 9th in a game in Kamloops.  The result in this one was a 5 – 0 victory against the same team as the evening before!  Goals scored by Austin Willier, Kurtis Johnson, Kaleb Carpenter, Levi Chamberlain and Connor Venne.  Pearson went the distance earning a well deserved shutout stopping 30 Storm shots.  Many fans in attendance at the games were observed scratching their heads wondering which team will show up next.  The Heat finished off their weekend with the Annual Banquet and Awards Night at the Community Hall.  Next up are the Sicamous Eagles on Wednesday the 13th at home prior to finishing off the season with two road games next weekend.

Knights and Grizzlies Beat the HEAT

February 4, 2013

Friday night February 1st in Armstrong was anything but a fun bus trip for the HEAT.  After a spring like day where we all saw snow disappear the local hockey team disappeared on the ice.  The North Okanagan Knights finished the evening with a 9 to 0 victory.  Jacob Mattes was riddled for 6 goals prior to Devon Pearson coming on in relief and seeing 3 get by.  We fought hard though with McKenzie Guardiero, Reece Forman and Drew Wilde all getting the boot after spirited contests.

Saturday night is alright for fighting but in the case of this home game there was none.  The Revelstoke Grizzlies came a visiting on February 2nd and the fans enjoyed a very entertaining game.  All tied up after 60 minutes the Mad Bears got an overtime marker just 1:49 into overtime to take a 4 to 3 victory.  Shelby Kostyshen got one and Nic Fidanza got a pair to lead the Heat.  Fidanza was first star in this one with Drew Wilde receiving the third star.  Pearson went the distance in this one stopping 25 of 29 shots.

The Heat play Wednesday the 6th in Revelstoke prior to a couple of back to back games versus the Kamloops Storm.  Friday the 8th Kamloops is at Art Holding Memorial Arena and on Saturday Chase heads to MacPark to take on the Storm.  Sunday the 10th is awards night for the Heat, tickets are still available by calling 778-220-6955 come out and support your team while enjoying a fine meal.

 All Keyed Up Last Weekend

The Chase Heat Junior Hockey Club played twice last weekend against hungry foes.

On Friday night the 25th at Art Holding Memorial Arena the local side met up with the Princeton Posse.  Outshot 38 to 29 the Heat lost this contest 5 to 3.  The big story in this one was local hockey product Michael Keyes potting two in the loss, the second one unassisted.  The other Chase goal went to Drew Wilde from Williams Lake.

Saturday night saw the Heat in Kamloops against the dastardly Storm.  This one was all Kamloops as they walked away with an easy 5 to 0 victory.  Chase was outshot 49 to 31.

This one was rough and nasty and the boys traveled home licking their wounds.

Next up the Heat travel to Armstrong to take on the Knights Friday February 1st, and the next night Saturday they host the snarling Revelstoke Grizzlies at 7:00 pm.  The Heat Awards Banquet is on Sunday February 10th at 5:00 pm, tickets can be purchased at home games or by calling 778-220-6955.

 Slap, Wrist and Long Shots

Jan 20, 2013

The Chase Heat held their destiny in their own hands this past weekend with a pair of home games at Art Holding Memorial Arena.  On Saturday January 19th they played the sixth game of the year versus the division leading North Okanagan Knights.  The score at the end 4 -3 was flattering for the home team as they managed a miserable 18 shots on Austin Buzzell between the pipes for the Knights who fired 47 shots.  Early on it was clear Buzzell was having an off night as the Heat poked 2 past him to get out to an early 2 – 0 lead, 4 shots in the first, 6 in the second and 8 in the third lost them a great opportunity for success.  The old adage is you can’t win if you don’t shoot and it held true in this contest.

Sunday afternoon the 20th saw the league cellar dwelling Grand Forks Border Bruins in town.  Chase fired 50 shots at Robert Dunsmuir in net for the Bruins, with 2 sneaking past him.  Unfortunately, the Bruins poked in three of 25 shots to take a 3 – 2 victory.

So whether it is a slap shot or a wrist shot that is taken, the Heat find themselves as long shots to make the playoffs in their second campaign.  With ten games left they are 11 points behind the Kamloops Storm.  The Storm have eight games left with three of them against the Heat.  Next up on Friday the 25th at 7:00 pm are the Princeton Posse.  The Heat Awards Banquet will be held on February 10th at the Community Hall, tickets to the bun fest can be purchased at any of the home games.  The Heat Jr. Hockey Society greatly appreciates the ongoing support provided by fans and sponsors.
